Kirkconnel and Kelloholm Children’s Gala was a great success this year with adults and kids from all across the community getting involved.
Although COVID restrictions once again prevented the Gala Week from running as planned, competitions were organised for everyone to participate in.
They included Best Window, Best Kept Garden and Decorate a scarecrow and place it in your garden, with prizes for each category.
On Saturday, June 19 there was a mini parade of the Royal Party which passed through streets such as Glenwhargen Avenue, Williamson Way, Guffock Road and Glenaylmer Road.
The community were asked to come out and support this year’s Royal Party, which they did.
P7 and P3 pupils at Kelloholm Primary voted for the Royal Party – they voted for Gabrielle Finlay as Queen, Daizy Taylor and Lucy Weir as Attendants and Harry Daubney as Page Boy.
Winners of the Scarecrow Competition were Janey McWillams in first place, Keira Bissett in second and A.R.C. in third.
The Decorated Window Competition saw Jude Griffin with his Willy Wonka design come up trumps on Glenaylmer Road while Eilidh and Zach Wark took second place with The Hungry Caterpillar on 35 Main Street. Braiden McLean at 95 Greystone Avenue came third with his Baby Shark.
The committee thanked Ian and Janice Marr for judging the scarecrows and Pat and Ruth Farrow for judging the windows. They said it was a tough job and all entries were amazing.
The gala committee also thanked Brighten Up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm for judging the Best Kept Garden Competition. In Old Kelloholm, winners were K Simpson at 11 Scott St in first place and D Kyle at 6 Hyslopt St in second. In Kelloholm, S McHugh at 12 Polmeur Rd was first while D Gallacher at 60 Dryburn Rd was second.
For Prefabs & Kingsway, I Marr at Kingway was first and J Gibson at 4 Guffock Rd was second.
Around Main St and Kirkconnel, J Rafferty at Mill Cottage was first and S&D Kilpatrick came second at Eastside Farm.
For Tubs and Baskets, Ann Harvey was first on Birkburn Rd and Nan Keenan second on Troston Rd.
The overall winner went to John Rafferty at Mill Cottage.
The Brighten Up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm Group also awarded a special community prize to Janet Mercer who enhanced a piece of land in Guffock Road.
The gala committee would like to thank everyone who gave so generously to the collection. The fantastic sum of £1,281 was collected.
