Robert Burns Academy pupils on Great Scottish Run in Glasgow

More than 20 took to the streets of Glasgow on Sunday, October 1, to raise funds for young Ava Bolton from Mauchline who has been raising money for potentially life-saving treatment in America.

After aiming to raise £250,000 to get the three-year-old to America for treatment for stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma, the team at RBA have played an amazing part in helping the Bolton family reach their total.

Staff and pupils completing the run manage to raise an incredible £1,530, after setting an initial target of £1,000.

Additional funds raised towards Ava's cause will be donated to various local causes and charities to help families, the family have said.

Once again, the brains behind the school's efforts was popular teacher, Mr Shepherd.

Mr Shepherd has battled through many fund-raising events throughout his teaching career, all for a range of different charities.

His first venture into a running event came back in 2011, when his 30-year-old son took his own life, leading to an event being held in his honour for Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and Mind.

Since then, his efforts have gone from strength to strength, with pupils and teachers always happy to jump on board with his ideas.

The pupils said: "There was lots of motivation all around us.

"It was a great buzz at the finishing line. We felt really supported by complete strangers.

"We loved the guy who shouted at us going up St Vincent Street, 'You're young and fit girls, keep going'.

 "The best moment was singing Disney songs. We had a great time."
