Cumnock's Citizen of the Year for 2023 received his award at the weekend.

Following an number of worthy nominations, the Keir McTurk Committee decided that David Perriman from Cumnock was the winner thanks to his years of work within the community.

David spent 26 years in the Army, a spell which included the likes of Belgium, Norway, Sardinia and Cyprus.

Originally from Surrey, David's final posting landed him in Glasgow.

His travels eventually brought him to Cumnock, where he has lived for more than 30 years.

His community work in the area over the years has included spells as the secretary of Cumnock Rotary Club, the treasurer of Netherthird Community Centre and helping out with the Cumnock Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club.

The award was handed over to David at an awards evening at Dumfries House at the weekend by 2022 winner, Marge Paterson.

Speaking about his award win, David said: "It's brilliant to win this award because there are always so many worthy people in the area that would be deserving of this every year.

"You don't expect to be highlighted for these things because that's not the reason you do it, but it's really nice to be recognised like this.

"This came as a complete surprise to me."

He added: "I just do these things because I like to be part of helping out as much as I can and trying to make a difference to the community.

"I'm grateful for the people who put me forward for this award and I'm grateful for those that selected me as the winner of the award.

"I'll keep my work going around Cumnock for as long as I possibly can."

Previous winners of the Cumnock Citizen of the Year award include animal surgeon John Senior, Mason Kidd, who received the award in 2017 when he was just 12 years old, and long-serving Cumnock Juniors official George Morton.
