CUMNOCK got off to a flier at the weekend but boss John McKeown is still keen to add to his squad.

The Townhead gaffer watched on as his newly promoted side thumped Lugar at home in the Ardagh Glass Cup on Saturday.

Nock smashed six past the Ayrshire District outfit, as three of their new recruits netted all of their goals, with goals from William Wells and Andy Muir as well as FOUR goals from ex-Shettleston striker Scott Anson.

Nock boss was chuffed with the result in his sides first competitive match on the new Townhead surface.

He said: "We have been a bot stop start in pre-season so it was good result for us.

"I was really pleased for Scott (Anson). He was maybe a wee bit short on confidence after last season with Shettleston. He played for a team last year who really struggled and he didn't score very many goals, so it was good for him to get a few goals. That'll do his confidence no harm at all."

The Nock boss is still hopeful of adding to his squad and he is waiting to hear back from two players he has offered contracts to.

He added: "I feel as if we are still a wee bit short but we still have a few irons in the fire.

"I think we have a very similar rebuilding job to the one we had last year. It's a bit unusual that the team who wins the league has a bit of a rebuilding job, but with a couple leaving to go senior and another few leaving due to work commitments, that's the position that we find ourselves in."

Nock have recently moved back to Townhead Park after spending last seasons ground sharing Rosebank Park with Lugar and the Nock boss is keen to get his side accustomed to the new surface.

McKeown said: "That's why we have played so many of our friendlies at home. We are trying to get the players used to it. To be honest, we have played well late on in those games and it was the same on Saturday."

McKeown's side now face a trip to Kello Rovers on Wednesday night before the bumper derby tie with Auchinleck Talbot on Monday.

The Nock gaffer added: "It's good to get in to the swing of things before we face the likes of Glenafton and Talbot."

McKeown was also pleased with the contribution of youngster TJ Shirkie. Mauchline lad Shirkie joined Nock earlier this month from Kilmarnock. McKeown said: "Saturday was a great opportunity to pitch TJ in to the team. He's only 19 years old and he's definitely one for the future so it was good to get him in to the team."

Cumnock travel to Kello Rovers on Wednesday, whilst Craigmark travel to Whitletts, Glenafton host Talbot and Muirkirk will entertain Lugar.
