Mauchline badminton ace, Holly Newall, came close to glory as she finished runer up at a tournament in Ireland

Holly produced the best Scottish performance at the Carlton Irish Under 19 Open in Dublin when she finished runner-up in the women’s singles.

Number six seed, Newall lost a close final with Sweden’s Ella Soderstrom (16-21, 21-15, 21-14) in 39 minutes as the Swedish player added the singles crown to her women’s doubles title.

Newall started with a bye and followed that with three straight game wins before clinching a hard-fought semi-final victory (23-21, 18-21, 22-20) to knock out Sara Penalver Pereira, the Spanish second seed who had defeated Dundee’s Lauren Middleton (22-20, 21-13) in the quarter-finals.
